We currently teach in excess of 450 students per week and have taught over 330,000 individual lessons since we opened in September 1996.

Our youngest student is 6, our oldest over 80! Over 40% of our students are adults – many starting to learn an instrument for the first time. We have seven dedicated teaching studios, each equipped with pianos, both acoustic and digital.

Are the lessons individual or in groups?

All tuition is given on a one-to-one basis. This allows the teacher to tailor the lesson to the individual student – working on the weaknesses and building on the strengths.

How long are the lessons?

Most students have a 30 minute lesson each week. Some students, especially those who are working at an advanced level, or those who travel a distance to the Centre for their lessons, may require longer.

Do I need my own instrument?

Yes. We do not have a stock of instruments available. There are, however, rental schemes available at many music shops in the area that have proved to be a popular way of “dipping a toe in the water” without a large financial outlay.

Are there any age limits?

There is a lower age limit depending upon the instrument but we have no upper age limits. Over a third of our students are adults, many coming to an instrument for the first time.

What about exams?

The NMC is an examination centre for both the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and Trinity College of Music. Students interested in entering for either practical or theory examinations are encouraged to do so. However, exams are not obligatory – many students preferring not to take this option.

What are the fees and how do I pay them?

£17 per half hour lesson (£18 from 1st January 2025), paid in groups of four at the first of every four lessons. Each student is given a detailed invoice showing lesson fees and any music supplied.

What happens if I need to cancel a lesson?

We do require one week’s notice in the event of a student needing to cancel a lesson. If the timetable permits, however, we will try to reschedule the lesson for another time within the same week.

Are there any other charges?

There is an initial registration fee of £5.00 added to your first invoice.

What do I do next?

We encourage students to visit the Centre and meet the teacher before making the commitment to lessons. An appointment can be made by contacting Pat Golightly.
